What’s the Purpose?

Does your furniture have a purpose?

As I continue to minimize clutter and simplify my space in my house I have to always go back to my number one rule in my Five Steps to Simplify Any Space.

Identify the purpose.

A while ago I wrote this post, Repurposing a Secretary Desk into a Charging Station. The purpose of the project was to have a place for every electronic device and cord in the house.  I was tired of tripping over cords and chargers being misplaced.

Creating a charging station was a labor of love and creativity.  However, now I have a home office where I charge my devices and the kids have little charging stations in their bedrooms. My beautiful secretary desk had no purpose –  except to hold a dying plant. (I swear someday I will have a green thumb! It’s not today!)

So, I sold it.  It didn’t have a purpose and was creating clutter!  It had to go.

I thought it would upset me to get rid of it.  However, this number one rule about pieces of furniture having a purpose makes the decision easy and it felt good to let it go.

The bonus…there is now a big space for a Christmas tree!!
