The 20 Minute Rule

Do you look at your to-do list and feel overwhelmed?

Are you thinking about your goal to work out but don’t feel like it?

Do you find yourself scrolling through Pinterest for an hour while looking for a simple appetizer recipe?

Are you wanting to simplify your space but you are so overwhelmed you don’t know where to start?

Try the 20 minute rule.  It’s a rule I use to get me going.  AND IT’S SIMPLE!!

Commit to 20 minutes of action.

For example, if you are looking at your to-do list:

  1. Pick one thing from your list
  2. Set your timer for 20 minutes
  3. Get busy.  Focused attention for 20 minutes.

Just think, that’s less than one episode of Friends.

You can commit for 20 minutes.  But here is the trick.

If you are interrupted, PAUSE THE TIMER.

This will help you to make sure you spend a concentrated amount of time on your activity.

If you have kids you may be interrupted and need to pause your timer to be present with your child(ren).

If you work in a position where you have a lot of interruptions it will validate for you why some tasks feel like they take all day.  Stick to it.  If it is taking longer than an hour to complete the 20 minutes then it’s time to shut your door!

Make the decision.

Don’t over dramatize it in your head.

It’s for 20 minutes.

Move into action.

Set the timer.

Cross it off your list!

What will your result be?

You will have one thing crossed off of your list = feeling of productivity!

You will be motivated to add another 20 minutes of work on.

You will be motivated to be efficient in your work and decisions = less decision fatigue!

You will FEEL GOOD about your accomplishment or your steps toward your goal = building confidence!

You will be taking action!

What do you need to commit 20 minutes to today?
