A New & Improved Linen Closet

This was such a satisfying project. I have two “linen closets” upstairs. To begin this challenge I started like I always do with my simplifying/organizing projects.

Step 1: Determine the purpose for the space

First, I took everything out so I could decide on a purpose for the space. I actually had to go through everything in the closet to decide on what I wanted in there. In the end, I ended up cleaning out two different closets and having different purposes for each of them. One for towels and bedding. The other closet holds medicine, toilet paper, Kleenex, and cleaning supplies.

Step 2: Sort through & categorize all the items in the space

While going through the closets I realized I had a ton of towels! I sorted first by color. I kept the white and brown towels that coordinated with our bathroom. Any other towel was donated.

Next, I sorted out all of the sheets by the size of the bed. I actually had sheets for sizes of beds that I don’t even own. Any sheets that were not for bed sizes we owned were donated. I decided to only keep one extra set of sheets for each bed in the house. That way we can change into the new sheets and I have time to wash the others.

Step 3: Decide how to store the items

I geeked out a little on the sheets. Each set has its own labeled basket. This tutorial for folding sheets actually makes such an unbelievable amount of sense and saved on storage space!

One item we have a lot of is beach towels. I decided to put them in a large basket on the floor so they are easy for the kids to get to. We go through a lot in the summer and this just seemed convenient. I also added a bin to store extra swimming suits. Now all swim gear is in one spot!

For the second closet, I didn’t have to purchase any more storage containers. I used what I already had in the house (bins and makeup bags) for storage.

Next, I usually focus on creating a system and decorating the space. With these closets, the system is as simple as putting things back where they belong. Or hopefully that simple:) There is also not much to decorate, but having it organized makes it look pretty nice! I ended up donating three huge bags of towels and sheets. The space is simpler and everything we use is easy to find!

Another space in the house is simplified and minimized! It feels so good!! One more week of success with my 52 Weeks of Wonder Challenge. I have now minimized the mudroom, drop zone, capsule wardrobe, and the game closet.
